Transport
Rickmansworth’s excellent transport links mean you can get to Central London in under 30 minutes on Chiltern Railways, or take a leisurely day and a half by narrowboat on the Grand Union Canal – possibly faster and definitely more pleasant than taking the M25.
Chorleywood (Transport for London Zone 6B), Rickmansworth and Croxley Green (Zone 6A) are all local Metropolitan Line stations (around 40 minutes to Kings Cross), and the M25 is only a mile and half away. A weekly Zones 1-D travelcard costs £60.80. Living in the countryside and working in the city is easy.

Green spaces, waterways and recreation
Enjoy 200 acres of grassland and woodland on Chorleywood Common, or sample local life in and around Croxley Green (one of the largest village greens in the county). The canal from Common Moor Lock down to Batchworth
Lock and beyond is one of the most beautiful and diverse stretches of the Grand Union, and offers much to walkers, cyclists and nature lovers. Other waterways include the Three Rivers – the Chess, the Gade and the Colne, and apart from giving their name to the district council they’re also a great resource for walkers, with many recreational trails crossing between them. For more active pursuits, Rickmansworth Aquadrome gives you the chance to indulge in water skiing and other water sports, and also has a children’s playground and a wide variety of wildlife.

Shopping, eating and drinking
Rickmansworth and Chorleywood both have branches of Brown Sugar delicatessen, and a life-saver for commuters is the M&S food hall in Rickmansworth – it’s open till 8.30pm.
The Coach and Horses in Rickmansworth town centre is a landmark traditional pub with open fire, but we are spoiled for good pubs in this area, many with excellent menus. The Gate in Chorleywood is particularly recommended for atmosphere and food. La Perla offers good Italian food.
Druid’s is a little more lively, and ‘15’ is a young bar atmosphere with Indian cuisine on offer.

Desirable neighbourhoods
Among the best areas to live in and around Rickmansworth include Cedars Estate (very popular, with large semis and detached properties), Chess Way, Loudwater, Valley Road, The Drive, The Clump, Berks Hill and Heronsgate. Ebury Road and Norfolk Road in the town centre are two of the best local roads in terms of location. Penn Heights is a good area for starter flats, mid terrace houses and small semis close to the William Penn Leisure Centre. The area around Croxley village green is also justifiably popular.

Regular Events
Rickmansworth has a full calendar of festivals, fairs and community events. The month of May sees the Rickmansworth Canal Festival, which forms part of a whole week of environmental and community events more properly know as Ricky Week.
Croxley Revels – a day of floats, maypole dancing, morris dancing and prizes - is on the Green on the third weekend in June. The summer is rounded off with Carters Steam Fair in September.
Chorleywood has firework displays on the common, and towards the end of November (in the run up to Christmas) Rickmansworth town holds a Victorian Night, with the local shop owners dressing up in Victorian costumes to sell their wares. Particularly good are Chris Blake the butcher’s sausage stall and Home Bakeries mulled wine stall. The Croxley Mummers act out a play just before Christmas, rounding off the year.

Local facts
Local son William Penn was the first great hero of American liberty. During the late seventeenth century, when Protestants persecuted Catholics, Catholics persecuted Protestants, and both persecuted Quakers and Jews, Penn established an American sanctuary which protected freedom of conscience. Almost everywhere else, colonists stole land from the Indians, but Penn travelled unarmed among the Indians and negotiated peaceful purchases. He insisted that women deserved equal rights with men. He gave Pennsylvania a written constitution which limited the power of government, provided a humane penal code, and guaranteed many fundamental liberties.
Heronsgate in Chorleywood was the first estate developed by Chartists in 1845 and was initially named O'Connorville after their leader, Feargus O'Connor. Thirty-five cottages and a school were built. Town-dwellers from the north of England were re-settled initially at subsidised rents and the street names, Stockport Road, Nottingham Road, Halifax Road and Bradford Road reflect their origins. The ban on alcohol, which was imposed at that time gave rise to the nearby public house being named "The Land of Liberty, Peace and Plenty".
